Port Moody Panthers Junior Hockey Club:
Panthers Sign South Korea National Junior Hockey Team Forward Chong Lee
- Submitted by
Port Moody, BC - The Port Moody Panthers announced today the signing of 19-year-old forward Chong Lee. The South Korea native comes to the Panthers after spending the 2014-15 season with Sun Duck High School in Korea, Coulee Region of the North American Hockey League and La Crosse of the North American Tier III Hockey League. Lee also played for South Korea at the fourth tier of the 2015 World Junior Hockey Championship, where he had five points (two goals, three assists) in five games.

As the captain for Sun Duck High in the Korean High School League, Lee had 30 points (17 goals, 13 assists) in 14 games to lead his team and finished second overall in the league in scoring. His 2.14 points-per-game was the best in the league.

"Ever since I started playing hockey, it's been my dream to play in Canada. I played in the United States last season, but this year I wanted to come to Canada and play," said Lee. "Joining the Panthers gives me a good opportunity to learn under one of the best coaches in Ron Johnson."

Lee, who is 6-foot-1 and 187 lbs., notched three points (one goal, two assists) in 13 games with Coulee Region and 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) in 14 games with La Crosse. He played for South Korea at the fourth tier of the IIHF World U18 Championship and led the tournament in scoring with 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in five games.

"Chong is a exceptional skater with good passing and good puck control skills. He sees the ice well and brings much needed offense to our roster," said Panthers Director of Hockey Development and Head Coach Ron Johnson. "Chong's signing now allows me to build four lines with a variety of looks. It creates more diversity throughout our line-up, which forces other teams to adjust to us instead of us to them."

"I like to think of myself as a 'pass first' player. I enjoy seeing my teammates score," added Lee. "I've played in two World Junior Championship tournaments, so I hope to bring that experience to Panthers."

Lee was selected by Admiral Vladivostok in the 2nd round, 64th overall in the 2013 Kontinental Hockey League Junior Draft and is expected to play on the South Korean men's national team as it tries to qualify for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Peyongchang.

"My main goal is to help the Panthers win this season. I like the  team, coaching staff, and management in Port Moody and look forward to learning the Canadian style of hockey," concluded Lee. "I hope to play for Korea at the 2018 Olympics and I think getting some international experience this season will help me reach that goal."

The Panthers next home game is Saturday, October 17th at 7:45 pm at the Port Moody Arena.
